Ch. 6: Creating Successful Transitions to Inclusive Settings

• Transenvironmental Programming is a four step model to help prepare students in order to be successful in an inclusive setting. It includes in environmental assessment, intervention and preparations, generalization to the new setting, and evaluation in the new setting.
• Environmental assessment involves analyzing critical features of the learning environment that affect the student performance.
• Intervention and preparation introduces to the students to procedures, routines, and skills that will help them to be successful in school.
• Preteaching is when the special education teacher uses the curriculum, style, and format of instruction used in the general classroom.
• The student can be taught learning strategies that will help him or her learn information and complete tasks effectively.
• Help students become organized by using daily written schedules and assignment logs.
• Generalization is transferring the training of the student into the general classroom, this takes time and occurs differently for every child.
• Student and family orientations, visits, shadow days and mentoring programs can help children learn about and become familiar with their new school.
• Teach culturally diverse students about the cultural norms of their new school while still respecting and valuing their own culture.
• Teach basic interpersonal communication skills to all students to help them build community and develop positive social behavior.
• Community-based learning programs offer students opportunities to learn skills necessary for living and working in communities. Career Education programs and Service learning programs help students transition to working after school and finding how they can contribute to the community.
• Teach goal setting and problem solving so students can develop and attain their own educational, social-emotional, and transitional goals.
• Promote self-awareness and self-esteem by helping students recognize their own strengths and abilities and helping them find meaningful ways they can contribute to the community in or out of school.
